The low-maintenance, energy- and cost-efficient SM Klebetechnik drum melters feature above-average melting and conveying performance as well as low residual material in the drum. The drum melters are suitable for different drum sizes and formats, e.g. for steel, cardboard and corrugated drums. When preparing the drum for use, employees receive all the relevant information needed to reduce changeover times.

The unique SM Klebetechnik drum melters enable hot melt adhesives to be used with the highest melting and conveying capacity on the market. The lifting unit moves the heated melting or follower plate vertically into the drum and, once the drum has been emptied, lifts it out again. During operation, it generates the required contact pressure between the melting plate and the material surface. This allows the melted medium to be fed reliably to the pump inlet. The coordination of lifting speed, contact pressure, melting capacity and pump delivery rate is crucial for achieving a consistent material flow.

The choice of lifting unit depends on the required pressing force, the desired level of control, cycle time and the available operating media. SM Klebetechnik drum melters can be equipped with pneumatic, hydraulic or electric lifting systems. In their standard configuration, the GX71 FlexControl and GX76 use pneumatic cylinders to move the heated follower plate in a controlled manner into the 200-litre drum.

The melting capacity indicates how much solid or highly viscous material the heated follower plate can melt per unit of time, usually specified in kg/h. The delivery rate, on the other hand, describes the amount of material supplied by the pump to the downstream process. Both parameters must be precisely matched to prevent material starvation at the pump and avoid unnecessary thermal stress. Depending on the medium, the GX76 achieves a melting capacity of up to 600 kg/h. The configurable delivery rate ranges from 5 to 600 kg/h.

The choice of pump primarily depends on the material viscosity, temperature behaviour, required delivery rate, pressure requirements and desired dosing accuracy. SM Klebetechnik drum melters can be equipped with gear pumps, twin-screw pumps, piston pumps, diaphragm pumps or double-pump systems. Gear pumps are particularly suitable for uniform volumetric pumping and provide precise, continuous material supply. Twin-screw pumps are designed for highly uniform, low-pulsation pumping and can offer advantages when processing highly viscous media. Piston pumps can generate pressures of up to 300 bar and are primarily used when materials need to be pumped against higher flow resistance. Diaphragm pumps mechanically separate the drive system from the medium and can be used for special, sensitive, chemically demanding or abrasive applications. Double-pump systems can provide higher delivery rates, redundant material supply or the parallel feeding of multiple consumers, depending on their configuration.

The residual amount depends largely on the geometry of the melting plate, the viscosity of the medium and the design of the drum seal. With a smooth Slim-Plate, a residual amount of approximately 0.5 kg can be achieved in 200-litre systems. This configuration is particularly suitable for low-viscosity adhesives and sealants and enables the drum to be emptied almost completely.

As the rib height increases, the available melting surface increases and therefore also the potential melting capacity. At the same time, however, the residual amount increases. For the Slim-Plate, the residual amount is approximately 2.5 kg with 26 mm ribs and approximately 3.8 kg with 40 mm ribs. The 26 mm version provides a balanced combination of high melting capacity and low residual material. The 40 mm version is designed for maximum melting capacity and for processing highly viscous materials with viscosities of up to 10,000 Pa·s.

The automatic venting system removes trapped air from beneath the melting plate and from the pump inlet area. This reduces the risk of interruptions in material pumping, pressure fluctuations and air inclusions in the material flow. The GX71 FlexControl and GX76 feature fully automatic venting of the underside of the melting plate and the pump. This supports a stable volumetric pumping process, particularly after drum changes or during system start-up.

Pressure control stabilises the material pressure between the delivery pump and the downstream consumer. The GX76 features electronic pressure control. The GX71 FlexControl can be equipped with electronic pressure control, a mechanical overpressure protection system and a pressure sensor with Performance Level “c”. This allows pump operation to be adapted to the process pressure while protecting the system against impermissible pressure conditions. The specific configuration depends on the material, hose system, delivery rate and connected application system.

For reproducible process control, drum melters can be equipped with process data logging, fill-level monitoring, flow-rate measurement and medium temperature monitoring. The GX76 offers millimetre-precise fill-level monitoring with programmable threshold switching. The GX71 FlexControl additionally provides recipe management, an operating-hours counter, user management and recipe storage via USB. These functions enable operating conditions, material consumption and other process-relevant parameters to be monitored and documented systematically, helping to improve process reliability and reproducibility.
